Sarah’s birthday cake
I didn’t make this (I hope that’s obvious). We celebrated Sarah’s birthday at Brunello’s in Somerville on Tuesday night, and our usual waitress did her usually fantastic job of making the night special. Not pictured: a round of lemoncello shots and a glass of port for the birthday girl.
San Francisco City Hall
We have a stack of concrete blocks that looks like a prison without the fence. They have a beautiful example of French Renaissance architecture with the tallest dome in the US and they’re not even a state capital! (which is actually why they got away with building a dome taller than the US Capital.) Wait til we post photos from the inside…

The View Down Pierce Street
I took this photo on my iPhone on a City Guides tour of Pacific Heights a couple days ago. It is one of the best views we’ve seen, but of course, the photo does it no justice. It is on Lynne & Ben’s street just over Alta Plaza Park.
We’ve done two City Guides tours so far. We’re doing another of San Francisco’s beautiful City Hall in just a few minutes. Then we’re going to rent some bikes and ride over the Golden Gate and to North Beach for some lunch.

Mid-trip update
We’re sort of in forced-relaxation mode right now, thanks to some pretty thick rain and fog over Clear Lake. We’re waiting on some laundry to dry and then we’ll be heading to the Blue Wing Saloon for lunch, where we’ll be returning for Monday Blues later this evening. We saw the hotel and saloon (which Sarah’s aunt and uncle own) for the first time on Saturday and were blown away. It’s a fantastic place to relax with a beer, and we’re planning on taking full advantage of that later.
In the mean time, here are some photos from the trip so far!

View from our window — Clear Lake, CA
In our typical fashion, we covered several hundred miles in the last couple of days, reminiscent of the big trip last year. Now we’re going to relax for a bit. This is from our hosts’ house, and we’re going to be spending a lot of time with this view. Coffee, beer, wine and probably a few books will be consumed in the next couple of days with that lake out front, and we’ll hopefully be doing some aquatic exploring, too. Don’t wait up!
Friday’s View from our Breakfast Table Window
This is the Carter House – one of the 5 buildings that makes up the Carter House Inns. It is a beautiful house. We stayed in the larger hotel building across the street.
We’re heading South today to Upper Lake. Forecast calls for high 70′s to lower 80′s and sunny : )

Our favorite view of the day
We spent yesterday exploring the Redwood National Park, checking another park off our list. While we did hike among the redwoods (and Sarah got to see an oh-my-God-is-it-huge! banana slug), this spot along the coastal drive was the highlight. We spent a long time just looking out at the coastline, where you can see three different shades of blue in the water, countless birds, and the distant mountains in the haze. As usual, the picture doesn’t even begin to capture it!

Friday’s View From Our Window
My aunt Lynne scored us a deal at The Carter House in Eureka. Seems like a great place so far, though our room overlooking the road isn’t ideal. I think the little house for rent across the street is adorable. We’re heading down for breakfast now, then we’re off to Redwood National Park. Hopefully the fog will break while we’re over-eating. More soon…
